Hereditary

The movie Hereditary came out in 2018 as a drama and thriller film. After watching the movie once, I had to watch it again. There was a lot I didn't understand, but after the second time I think I got the gist of it. The grandmother whose funeral we see in the beginning was a part of a cult that worshiped and raised the biblical demon Paimon, the king of Hell which we learn at the end of the movie. The grandmother, being the leader of the cult, rose the demon and used her body as the host. This is what cursed the family throughout the movie as Paimon needed a male host, but was past to the youngest Charlie after the grandmother past. Once Charlie was beheaded, he could finally pass to Peter, the eldest son. Only after Paimon managed to kill the entire family, including Peter could he finally have full control of his body. There are two versions we see of the grandmother throughout the movie. The first being a unmotherly woman who loved her granddaughter and second being this insane sadistic woman who only created her family to bring the demon Paimon back. The whole movie is uncanny in the fact that this demon is creating inhumanly actions in these people. Even the sounds and scenes of the movie are uncanny. One moment it seems like a normal family argument and then it escalates to something else more harsh. As soon as I learned about the term 'uncanny' I knew it related to this film entirely. It gives the perfect example of a normal dysfunctional family turning eerie and dark.
